Welcome to “Living your best life after forty” where women, or anyone, can find information about work/life balance, health, well-being and fitness focused at life after forty.
My name is Deirdre McKenzie and I am a 43-year-old New Zealand woman who has tried everything over the years to stay fit and healthy, both mentally and physically, and now that I am in my forties my desire to shape what my future looks and feels like, in every way, is my focus.
I am a loving wife, a mother to two for legged animals, an Executive Officer, a friend, a daughter and a proud Kiwi (New Zealander).
I have always maintained that health, well-being and fitness are the tools that will see me into my later years with mental strength, mobility and my health so my focus has been on that since I joined the NZ Air Force at age 17. The Air Force taught my how to create and achieve goals, highlighted the need for discipline and dedication, and to push yourself into the uncomfortable zone to achieve what you want in everyday life. I guess I was lucky to have that tool handed to me on a plate and I’m grateful!
Forced into running while trying to get fit for Air Force entry requirements has had me running ever since. Don’t get me wrong, I am not an “athlete” but I set my own goals and work hard to achieve them. My greatest running achievement was running the Auckland half-marathon in 1hr38mins when I had aimed for 1hr40. My greatest failure was running the Rotorua Marathon, hitting the wall at 31kms and pulling out of the run when I was on track for a 4hr finish (I will tell you about how I faced that run again and finished in my blog). But, running and I have a love hate relationship and I sometimes get out of the groove with it and feel the need to change things up, something I always regret because it is tough to get your running “Mojo” back when you’ve given up and lost the fitness.
I have tried it all, diets, different fitness crazes and I am now at a point where I know what works, especially as my body and mind has changed over the years. There is no one stop shop, there is no one fit for all, you need to find what works for you and you alone as everybody is different. That’s what I have learned in the lead up to my 40s and what I intend to be my main principle for beyond.
I set up www.fitnessafterforties.com to share my journey towards physical and mental longevity with the goal of helping others, it’s as simple as that. You may get plenty of benefit from my site, and I hope you do, but you may not and that’s ok as I said it’s not a one size fits all.
What you will find on LYBLAF?
You will find stories, tools, strategies, tried and tested diets, fitness plans that have got me to where I am today and those I expect to take forward or those I may add to do my best to make sure that I am mentally well and able heading into my 50s, 60s and beyond.
Let me do the research for you, let me try some of these things before I recommend them to you and in return all I ask is to hear how this site has helped you change your life for good.
If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.
All the best,
